AlexRenew Environmental Center

Alexandria, VA

Project Details:

Rust|Orling worked with Alexandria Renew Enterprises to design The Environmental Center, a new 6-story, LEED NC v2009 Platinum, main administrative facility for this advanced wastewater treatment authority.

Members of the public are greeted on the ground floor with a naturally lit two-story lobby space featuring educational displays, an aquarium and a biofilter wall integrated into the building ventilation system that delivers oxygen to the public spaces on the first two floors.

The administrative offices of Alexandria Renew Enterprises are housed on the 2nd through 5th floors. For future flexibility, demountable partitions and raised access flooring were utilized to create a combination of closed and open office spaces. Natural daylight was a priority; over 90 percent of workspaces are provided with direct views to the outdoors. The 6th floor and roof terraces are dedicated for community use and provide 360-degree views of Alexandria. A variety of conference rooms and open space are available for events up to 184 people. Meeting facility amenities include fully equipped audio/visual systems, dry-erase board walls, and a catering kitchen.
