This notable North Old Town Alexandria structure, originally built in the 1980s, doubled in size with an addition in the 1990s, both done by ROA. The challenge was to develop a landmark office building of distinctive character on the George Washington Memorial Parkway at the north entrance to Alexandria. The prominent site is a narrow, wedge-shaped parcel located between a major traffic artery and a major cross-town street. It is also located within the Old and Historic District of Alexandria whose architectural review board viewed it as a gateway building for the city. The developer wished to maximize the impact and usable floor area of the oddly configured 5,600 square foot site. The bold design solution is based upon a symmetrical triangle which gives equal importance to the two street facades.
